Summer Sailboats

Summer Sailboats

15.5 inches x 24 inches
40cm x 61cm

This is a small quilt I made following a visit to Aberdovey in Wales. Like most coastal places, the weather changes constantly. It can be cloudy and grey but we were lucky.
I loved the way the sunlight caught on the cresting waves and how the water lapped onto the sandy beach with frothy ripples. Beautiful!
I’ve used a variety of fabrics in this piece – hand dyed cotton, indigo dyed velvet and linen, scrim and tulle. It’s all free motion machine quilted.

Crow Song

Crow Song

18.5 inches x 25 inches
47cm x 63cm

This little quilt showcases a digital print of one of my crow paintings at its centre. The print was made using fibre reactive dyes and is surrounded by my own hand dyed cotton fabrics. The feathers are applied using painted fusible webbing. Variegated threads lend subtle colour interest to the free motion quilting and there is additional hand seed stitching for texture. It has a hidden sleeve at the top edge so is ready for hanging – just needs a slim batten or rod.

Squares and Circles

Squares and Circles

28 inches x 50 inches
72cm x 127cm

This is a pieced quilt of squares with appliquéd and stencilled, mixed media circles. Most of the fabrics are my own hand dyed and painted cottons but there are some commercially printed but overdyed and/or discharged fabrics in there too. The are also a few painted fusible webbing circles and some breakdown prints from a good friend. It’s a real mix of materials and techniques but I think it works well!

Drawn to the Moon

Drawn to the Moon

25.5 inches x 35 inches
65cm x 89cm

This is a whole cloth quilt with lots of free motion machine quilting and a little hand quilted detail. The swirling moths have been discharge printed from the charcoal grey fabric using a number of compressed sponge blocks. The moon has been painted with fabric paints. I hope I have achieved a mysterious and moonlit night flight!

Hurt No Living Thing

Hurt No Living Thing

42 inches x 31 inches
107cm x 79cm

This is a pieced quilt featuring a monoprinted screen print surrounded by my hand dyed and discharged cotton fabrics. The text which gives the quilt its title is a quote from a poem by Christina Rossetti. Her words about ‘moth with dusty wing’ resonated with me – it speaks of their fragility. It has been block printed with additional hand painted detail. The quilting is largely free motion machine stitch and there is lots of hand quilting and knotting too.

I love paint so when the chance arose to submit a piece for a competition entitled The Magic of Colour, I knew straight away what my inspiration would be.

Exhibited in The Magic of Colour, Carrefour Europeen du Patchwork (and subsequent tour), Winner of France Patchwork Prize, Winner of Best Machine Quilting.
