Grapevine

Grapevine

12.5 inches wide x 18.5 inches long
32 cm x 47 cm

This little quilt features  a digitally embroidered grapevine design which I’ve extended by adding hand painted bunches of grapes and extra leaves. I worked the embroidery over a digitally quilted design and combined it with free motion machine quilting. The fruits and leaves I’ve added have been painted with acrylic fabric paints and finally I embellished the work with lots of hand stitched French knots. The cotton fabric base is a digital print of some flaking plaster Laura photographed on holiday in Portugal. I liked the idea of the vine scrambling over the ancient wall of the house!

Silver Trees

Silver Trees

39 inches wide x 39 inches long
100cm x 100cm

This quilt was made to satisfy a challenge for our Thr3fold exhibiting group. It was inspired by a fabulous sunset viewed one evening during the drive from the hills above Vancouver to downtown. The silver trees that gave the quilt its name were a beautiful feature of the garden of fellow Thr3fold member, Catherine Nicholls. Lit from below their white trunks shone theatrically through the dark night! I used marbled fabrics discovered at the Quilt Museum at La Conner together with my hand dyes. The piece has been free motion machine quilted and I’ve accentuated the effect of the feather motifs within the quilting by highlighting them with metallic, copper fabric paint. One edge of the quilt has been embellished with natural shell buttons secured with bright red thread to echo some of the colours of the marbled fabric.

And In His Dreams He Heard The Surf Roar

And In His Dreams He Heard The Surf Roar

28.5 inches wide x 35.5 inches long
73cm x 90cm

This quilt was inspired by Hemingway’s Old Man and the Sea. (I always like to have a title before I can resolve the design of a quilt and this quote was perfect!) It features block printing of the traditional patchwork design, Storm at Sea, using acrylic paints. The blocks have been hand printed onto a digitally printed image I took of an ancient fishing boat I discovered languishing on a beach in Brittany, France. The colours of the many layers of peeling paint on the old wooden planks were inspirational and provided such a gorgeous background for the printing that followed. The text is an inkjet transfer onto painted fusible webbing, bonded to the surface of the fabric and then embellished with hand stitch. I have used both hand quilting and free motion machine quilting in this piece.

The strange fish swim through a curtain of metallic gold fronds which I have free motion quilted and then hand painted. The quilt has a hidden sleeve ready for hanging – all you will need is a suitable batten.

Paintbox 2

Paintbox 2

51 inches x 29 inches
130 cm x 74 cm

This is the second quilt I made inspired by my precious paintbox. I firstly painted the box using oil pastel with watercolour washes and then the painting was scanned and digitally printed onto cotton fabric using fibre reactive dyes. I rarely clean the mixing palette, preferring to let my favourite colours flow from one painting session to the next – my free motion machine quilting follows the contours of the stains and spills on the wood of the box as well as the patches of colour in the half pans and those left in the china mixing palette. It was a joyous piece to work on!

Talisman 2

Talisman 2

25.5 inches x 28 inches
65 cm x 71 cm

This is the second in a series of Talisman quilts I made a few years ago. It was exhibited at Festival of Quilts at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham and has been in storage ever since – seems a pity to be hidden away! I wanted to evoke a  sense of a primitive protective spirit. The fabrics are discharged linen and cotton with silk details. The text was created using painted fusible webbing. The quilt features lots of both hand and machine stitching. The three little beaded and embellished pockets are devised to hold precious secrets!

Summer Sailboats

Summer Sailboats

15.5 inches x 24 inches
40cm x 61cm

This is a small quilt I made following a visit to Aberdovey in Wales. Like most coastal places, the weather changes constantly. It can be cloudy and grey but we were lucky.
I loved the way the sunlight caught on the cresting waves and how the water lapped onto the sandy beach with frothy ripples. Beautiful!
I’ve used a variety of fabrics in this piece – hand dyed cotton, indigo dyed velvet and linen, scrim and tulle. It’s all free motion machine quilted.
