7923-04 Patchwork and Quilting Diploma Module 5

In Module 5 students explore the possibilities of foundation piecing and working with paper and stitch for mixed media pieces. They also begin to consider the potential of their designs for the first Assessment piece, the Miniature Quilt.

Left : Jean has sampled foundation piecing techniques.

Below: The preparatory work for Catherine's first assessment piece, the miniature quilt. Catherine's theme of Angels had led her to design a quilt inspired by stained glass windows. See the completed assessment in the Module 6 Gallery.

Below: Jean is also responding to her Research for her miniature design. Jean's theme of Walls, in this case the Berlin Wall has provided the inspiration. On the left is a paper mock up of how the quilt could look, with a selection of potential fabrics presented on the right.

Below: Anna looked to her work on mathematical progressions for the inspiration for her miniature. The complex design was drawn out on paper first in black and white. The final quit was worked in colour, see it in the Module 6 Gallery.

Below: Working with paper and stitch was one aspect to consider as part of this Module.Here are some of Anna's samples together with detailed images on the right hand side. She has used hand painted papers with hand dyed threads to great effect.

Left: Jean's sample of paper and stitch techniques was again a direct result of the work into her research theme of walls.
