7923-04 Patchwork and Quilting Diploma
The first Module of the course guides the students through selecting their theme for the Research for Design unit, collecting source information and beginning work on the contextual Studies. Because of the nature of these activities there is limited visual work that we can show here in the Gallery, but be sure to visit the subsequent Module Galleries to see how the students begin to get to grips with their subjects and the exciting techniques used to interpret their inspiration. Below is a small collection of images to illustrate some of the first work for the course.
Surrounding images: BJ's theme for her Research for Design unit it 'the Horse'. We think it's a subject with lots of potential! Above: one of BJ's first sketches. Left: Prints with thickened dye on cotton fabric.
Above, below and right: Polly is exploring the colours and patterns in African tribal clothing.
Above, left and below: Laura is using the components of clocks and watches as the theme for her research for design collection of work.
Right and below: Alison's personal experience of Africa and her collections of objects is the basis for her research.
Left and above: Daniele is working on a personal research theme of trees. Here are a selection of her early sketchbook pages.
Right and above right: Further design work from Daniele's sketchbook.
Left: Lesley will research tarot cards for her course work.
Above: Some early pages from Lesley's sketchbook.
Left: Leah has taken the theme of ecclesiastical architecture as the broad focus of her Research work. Here are a few of the first pages from her sketchbook.
Maureen is researching the Ocean as a potential source of design inspiration. Her exciting artwork on the right uses bleach as an unconventional art medium and illustrates the markings of the turtle shell perfectly.

Catherine is researching the theme of angels for her Diploma course. The images on the left show a tiny proportion of her collection of visual source material.

Anna is presenting her research findings for contextual studies as a written, illustrated study.

The study is a fascinating look at the past influences on the development of Patchwork and Quilting and will become a valuable resource of ideas for contemporary interpretation.

We hope you have enjoyed browsing through the first examples of our students work for this exciting new course. Additional images will be added as soon as have them! Why not take a look at the gallery for Module 2?
