Pineapple #3
80" x 80"
£500

Pineapple is one of my favourite traditional blocks, and since it is constructed with eight strips surrounding a central four-patch, there is great potential for playing with colour arrangements. I pieced this quilt to suggest three visual layers. On first glance I hope you see the globes of gold and red colour and then become aware of the space dyed grey lattice, and finally that all of these float on a charcoal background.

The quilting is worked with single strand embroidery thread in blocks of colour which relate to the globe nearby. My design source for this piece came from researching the paintings of Paul Klee, his recurring sun symbols and use of the grid structure. To disguise the sever geometry of the block I have applied torn strips of fabric over some of the pieced strips of the pineapple block. Most of the fabrics and threads were microwave dyed.

Forming part of my City & Guilds Part Two body of work it helped me achieve a Medal of Excellence, and also won two 2nd places at Quilts UK.
