for a truly individual look! The workshop consists of three project sections
each with clear requirements and instructions to make three types of simple
handmade books. When you've mastered the basics there are also ideas for taking
the projects further.
To complete the projects you will need:
Tools and Equipment
Cutting mat and knife
Ruler
Needle with a large eye
Stiletto
Eraser
Bulldog clips or clamps
Glue brush or spreader
Paper clips
Materials
Heavy card, mount board or similar at least
30cm x 350cm (11" x 13")
Lightweight card, cereal box or similar at least 25cm x 12cm (10" x 4")
Good quality drawing paper at least 2 A1 sheets (approx 84cm x 60cm) (approx
32" x 24")
Strong thread approximately 3 metres (3 yards)
High tack white glue, PVA or similar
Paper suitable for decorating the covers, hand painted papers can make an
attractive cover at least 2 sheets 30cm
x 35cm (12" x 14")
Fabric suitable for decorating the covers, hand dyed fabric is lovely, light
to medium weight cotton fabrics are easiest to use at least 25cm x 20cm (10"
x 7")
1 metre/yard of flat ribbon
Pencil
The quantities listed above will be enough for
you to make one of each style of book, each 13cm x 10cm (5"
x 4"). As your confidence with the basic techniques grows, you may like
to experiment with other shapes and sizes of book, and include a whole range
of papers and other materials.

'Paper and Stitch'

We are going to combine fabrics, threads and papers, adding detail with beads,
buttons and stitch to create a decorative art panel. Because of the nature
of the materials used, this project is not washable but perfect for framing
and displaying in your home.
To complete the projects you will need:
Tools and Equipment
Electric ring heat source (never use a naked flame!)
Metal baking tray with shallow sides (Swiss roll tin is ideal)
Tongs
Crumpled plastic bag
Basic sewing kit
Scissors for cutting paper
Scissors for cutting fabric
2 or 3 colours of acrylic paint or ink
Oil pastels in colours that contrast with the acrylics
Plastic sheet or newspapers
Apron
Large brush or sponge brush for acrylic painting
Palette or old plate for mixing acrylic paints
Optional; Pyrography tool
Materials
Selection of papers. Try to include lightweight hand made paper, brown
parcel paper, gift wrap, hand painted drawing paper.
Household candle or beeswax block
Hand embroidery threads
Small seed beads
Small metal washers
Shirt buttons
Pieces of fabric for background to paper appliqué. Hand dyes are perfect.
Scraps of loose weave fabric to make small frayed edged shapes for appliqué
units.
Optional supplies include:
A a sheet of flexible cork (from model railway suppliers)
Light gauge copper sheet metal (from craft and embroidery suppliers)
Flexible copper wire (from hardware stores)
Cane
Paper wrapped wire (from cake decorators)
