What does 7923 04 Patchwork and Quilting Online involve?
During this advanced level course you will be required to develop skills and knowledge already gained at 7922 level. You will work from a variety of inspirational design sources to produce a portfolio of experimental samples. You will discover and create a range of non

conventional materials for extended patchwork, quilting and appliqué techniques. You will produce an in-depth visual research document on a subject of your own choosing and will also research both traditional and contemporary practice within the craft of quiltmaking. The emphasis throughout will be on an individual approach to design challenges in order to create unique work. Students will be introduced to effective colour theory and practice, and fabric dyeing, painting and printing techniques. The unique fabrics created during

the course will be used in conjunction with advanced patchwork and quilting techniques to produce innovative assessment pieces. You will discover exciting ways of interpreting a design theme, how best to work to a design brief and how to present visual and written information to a potential client. Each item will be costed and evaluation of every part of the designing and making process will be recorded. Individuals are encouraged to attend exhibitions where possible and compile a collection of visual and technical information relevant to the craft at this advanced level. Motivation and commitment to self guided study is a desirable

attribute however, a regular dialogue between student and tutor is encouraged and expected. Assessment and continuous evaluation will be a valuable part of the two way interaction. Email makes this an easy and more immediate process - less formal than the usual contact between tutor and student of distance learning packages.
All work is subject to External Verification to ensure that the high standards demanded by the awarding body are met. Upon satisfactory completion of the complete course, a City & Guilds' certificate will be awarded.
The syllabus is covered in

10 modules, designed to build upon skills and knowledge gained as candidates progress through the set activities. Modules are made available to candidates as the previous one is completed satisfactorily or as appropriate to individual progress. Individuals will receive an evaluation of their ideas, and suggestions on how to proceed at every stage. To achieve certification from City & Guilds of London, candidates must complete all syllabus requirements satisfactorily. In order to maintain the high standard required, work is assessed online by both Linda Kemshall and Laura Kemshall as tutors, and the standard is verified by an External Verifier working on behalf of City & Guilds.

What support is available?
You may email for additional help with any of the set tasks if you have difficulties or simply want to chat about ideas. We aim to reply to you as quickly as possible, but bear in mind, there may occasionally be short delays as we do teach away from home several times a year. If one of us is away, we forward messages to each other so that we can keep up to date with your progress.

Laura is always happy to give technical advice about sending images etc. For your interest and information we write an e-newsletter on the 'What's New' page at the beginning of every month. Past newsletters are archived in case you need to refer back to a particular item. We have a 'Student Gallery' showing a selection of work created by our Diploma students. The gallery is the best place to see how the course is progressing and how imaginative fellow students are being!

We like to stress at all times that this is not an IT course, so if you lack confidence when using the computer just let us know and we can talk you through the process step by step.
