What does 7822-10 Patchwork and Quilting Online involve?
The syllabus provides a thorough grounding in craft and design skills, and is delivered in 10 separate units. Students are introduced to colour theory and practice, fabric colouring and printing, and a variety of patchwork, quilting and applique techniques. You produce and work to a design brief and two projects will be designed and made. Individuals are encouraged to attend exhibitions where possible and compile a collection of visual and technical information relevant to their subject. The course is suitable for those beginning in patchwork and quilting, or those who already have a knowledge of techniques but wish to work towards a more individual method of working. Assessment and evaluation will be a valuable part of the interaction between student and tutor. Email makes this an easy and more immediate process - less formal than the usual contact between tutor and student of distance learning packages.
All work is subject to External Verification to ensure that the high standards demanded by the awarding body are met. Upon satisfactory completion of all 10 modules, a City & Guilds' certificate is awarded. The syllabus is covered in 10 modules, designed to build upon skills and knowledge gained as candidates progress through the set activities. Most people take a year to complete (120 hours study). The course is designed to appeal to absolute beginners in art and design and to those with more experience who would like the challenge of working creatively within a structured framework. Inevitably, within any group, there will be variation in abilities and skills. Most activities have a 'Now Take it Further' option for those who wish to develop an idea and stretch their imagination. Individuals will receive an evaluation of their ideas, and suggestions on how to proceed at every stage. To achieve certification from City & Guilds of London, candidates must complete all syllabus requirements satisfactorily. In order to maintain the high standard required, work is assessed online by our tutors, and the standard of assessment is verified by an External Verifier working on behalf of City & Guilds.
What does 7922-03 Patchwork and Quilting involve?
This is a Level 3 City & Guilds qualification. Students may choose to enter the programme of study at this level or begin with Level 2 7822 first. The 7922 course takes most people around 2 years to complete (420 hours) and involves 2 units of study. Unit 1 looks at the elements of design. Students will produce a set of work to illustrate each element, colour, line, shape, texture and form. Unit 2 is a thorough exploration of all aspects of patchwork, quilting and applique. 5 Assessment items will be created using original ideas developed from Unit 1 design work. As with all City & Guilds schemes, assessment and verification occurs throughout the course. Following satisfactory completion of the course, certificates recognising competence in both design and craft are awarded by City & Guilds.
What support is available?
You may email for additional help with any of the set tasks if you have difficulties or simply want to chat about the possibilities. We aim to reply to you as quickly as possible, but bear in mind, there may occasionally be short delays as we do teach away from home several times a year. If one of us is away, we do forward messages to each other wherever possible so that we can keep up to date with your progress. Laura is always happy to give technical advice about sending images etc. To keep you informed, we post an e-newsletter on the 'What's New' page at the beginning of every month and the 'Student Gallery' pages are updated regularly. We think the gallery pages are the best way of discovering the work of fellow students.
