| I live and work in the heart of England on the South Staffordshire/Shropshire border. Whilst growing up I was always surrounded by a range of arts and crafts. It was textiles, and particularly the influence of my mother's work which inspired me to pursue my ideas in that media. In 1997 I began a BA Honours Textiles course at The University of Central England in Birmingham. With experience in constructed, embroidered and printed textiles, I chose to take the route of embroidery for the main part of the course. Since graduating with a degree in the summer of 2000, I have continued to work on art textile pieces for exhibition and competitions around the country. Developing themes that I began to work with towards the end of the course, my work is inspired primarily by a sense of time and place. I have done several series of work this year that consider the metamorphosis of static objects over time, much of the imagery for this work is taken from the landscape which surrounds my home. | |||||||||||||||

I am continually drawn to the tactile nature of
textiles and often heavily hand stitch my work. I enjoy the handling of the
object as I work it and never use a frame to stretch the work. Combined with
the hand stitching, I like to use some machine quilting/embroidery to embellish
a surface that has often been hand painted, dyed, printed or drawn on. Using
a combination of techniques and especially the direct involvement of drawing
is becoming a dominant characteristic of my work. Linda and I are both members of the exhibiting group 'six'. Check our the 'six' website for latest exhibition dates and venues. |
