At the conclusion of our Online 7802/7822 Patchwork and Quilting Course, students who have satisfied all the syllabus requirements are awarded a certificate by the awarding body, City & Guilds of London. We would like to offer our congratulations too!

Mairi Wheeler

Mairi's final assessment item is a beautiful bed quilt made as a wedding gift to celebrate the marriage of a family member. We think they are very lucky to receive such a beautifully made present!
Worked entirely in cream and pale yellow silk the quilt features a range of applique, quilting and patchwork techniques.

Left: The subtle colour change enhances the light and shadow created with the folded techniques. Here Cathedral Window creates texture.
Below: Mitred inserts are also added.
To complement the final assessment quilt, Mairi's first project was a ring pillow also destined for the family wedding.
A similar palette of colour was used to ensure that the two items coordinated perfectly. Above: The front and back of the pillow.
Above: Mairi thoroughly recorded her sampling and exploration of potential materials for this item. Right: One of Mairi's working drawings for the pillow which was worked with applique and quilting.
Above and right: Examples of stencilling on fabric using Markal to suggest transparency and layering.
Left: Prairie points became foxgloves in this lovely small quilt.
Below: Other folded techniques in paper.
Right: A sample of printing used in shadow applique with hand stitching.
Left: Mairi explored colour and made collections of both paper and fabric that were presented creatively.
Above right: A range of Mairi's hand dyed fabrics and threads.
Below: Printed, appliqued and quilted hexagons. Below right: A pieced landscape.
Right: Pieced hexagons with hand quilting using a lovely range of soft greens.
Below: Mitred patchwork takes on a quirky look in this sample to look like a standard bay tree!
