At the conclusion of our Online 7802/7822 Patchwork and Quilting Course, students who have satisfied all the syllabus requirements are awarded a certificate by the awarding body, City & Guilds of London. We would like to offer our congratulations too!

Brenda Smith

Brenda's final assessment piece was this dramatic wallhanging. Worked in appliqué with pieced border it is inspired by the banana flower.
Left: a close up of one area of the hanging. The black background adds drama to the piece that is heavily quilted.
Right: The original source photo of the banana flower. We think Brenda has captured the mood and dynamic composition of this photograph perfectly.
Left: Brenda's first assessment piece inspired by boats in a harbour. The traditional block Drunkard's Path is used with irregular colour placement to bring a contemporary twist. The curved seams suggest movement of both the wind and the water.

Below: Details of the quilt showing the free machine quilting.

Below left: Some of the design work that led to this piece including the location storyboard.
Above: Brenda took time to resolve the design fully on paper before working in fabric, essential when working with a complex colour arrangement such as this. Above right: Some of the lovely hand dyed fabrics created for this piece.
Right: Brenda's suggestion of how the quilt could look in an interior.

Below: Some early work from the course.
Above: The source photo, top left, led to this set of work interpreting colour in the landscape into hexagon piecing. Above right: the colour layout drawn on paper. Above left: Swatches of potential fabrics to work with. Above Right: The sample almost completed showing Brenda's painterly use of colour with this technique.

Below: More work inspired by landscape, this time the wonderful mountains in the photograph on the left were interpreted using curved paper piecing.

Above: Samples from Brenda's extensive portfolio. Strong use of colour and interesting fabrics transforms these simple techniques.

We are only able to show a small selection of Brenda's work on this page. If you have enjoyed the exhibition why not take a look at Brenda's personal website at
