| Annie's final quilt for the course was inspired by the local landscape and ecological issues. The ibis forms the central focus of the design with other references to the | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| native flora and fauna. Piecing and applique techniques are combined with free machine quilting together with some hand stitched embellishments. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: A close up detail of the finished quilt showing two further birds. A large area of the background was subtly pieced to create variation and interest. Above: A close up showing the Ibis as work in progress. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The bottom corners of the quilt were shaped to reflect the natural and organic inspiration of the design. Vertical strips to suggest the trunks of plants also continued out of the frame of the quilt and formed the hanging device. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Above: A detail of one of the areas of the quilt that uses hand applique. Right: Pages from Annie's sketchbook showing part of the design development for the quilt. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: Annie's first assessment quilt was also inspired by the natural environment. Here eucalyptus leaves were chosen as the main motif. Stencilling and applique are combined with patchwork and folding techniques. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Above and left: Details of the work showing the quilting and folded inserts that are set into the borders. Beads add an extra touch of embellishment. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: A sample from Annie's portfolio of further ideas with folded inserts. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: An American block patchwork design. Annie took time to carefully plot the placement of the tonal values for maximum impact. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Right: An applique sample with a lovely leaf motif. The gentle colours and successful arrangement works well. The binding has the added detail of a wrapped threads. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: A sample from Annie's portfolio worked after researching other quilters' styles. It involves a whole range of techniques | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| including image transfer and applique. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: Mitred triangles are given a contemporary twist in this serpentine arrangement using hand dyed fabrics. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Right: Further folded patchwork samples presented in a sketchbook. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: Annie made full use of her sketchbook to present her work. Here the reference images are on the left with the sample and sketch to the right hand side. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Left: This sample of patchwork was pieced using the English method over papers allowing the sharp curves to be captured accurately. Hand quilting follows the contours to complete the work. Below: More samples of hand quilting, both wholecloth and with patchwork. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right: Further examples of Annie's sketchbook work, this time showing her explorations with grids to create patchwork designs. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
