At the conclusion of our Online 7802/7822 Patchwork and Quilting Course, students who have satisfied all the syllabus requirements are awarded a certificate by the awarding body, City & Guilds of London. We would like to offer our congratulations too!

Wil Opio Oguta

Wil's striking final assessment piece is a wall hanging inspired by poppy flower heads. Worked in 3D, the flowers, leaves and buds create real drama.

Below: Wil's initial drawing for the quilt design.
Right: Details showing the 3D applique of the flowers worked on to a background of hand pieced hexagons.
The attention to detail demonstrated by the red binding and red quilting complete the piece beautifully.

Left: the poppy flowers are kept simple with a cut edge and understated detail of the stamens.

Right: Wil's first assessment quilt was a wall hanging inspired by the local architecture. 3D elements are again included, here to suggest open windows and doors.

Left: The initial design drawing that would be interpreted with reverse and bonded applique.

Right: Wil hand dyed a gorgeous range of fabrics for this project.
Right:: Hand printed motifs on paper became the basis of some successful samples.
Left: A machine quilted print.

Right: A simple print motif is perfect for this sample of  hand quilted shadow applique.
Left and below: More of Wil's print exercises.
Below: Examples of paper piecing using regular and irregular hexagons.

Left: Wil experimented with 3D form and the use of mitred triangles in paper.

Below: Prairie point inserts.
Left: Another example of prairie points used to great effect.
Below: Stencilling on fabric.
Above: The pretty leaf motif was reused in this sample combining printing with applique.
Right: A curved piecing sample beautifully quilted by hand to emphasize direction.
