We would like to show a selection of work that was produced by Maureen to achieve her Diploma qualification. Maureen's large quilt assessment was inspired by turtles. The quilt features hand dyed fabrics, discharge techniques, piecing, fabric manipulation and machine quilting. Notice how the tiny accents of turquoise blue add a vital zing to the colour scheme. |

The detail pictures below and on the right, show how Maureen created the impression of the 3D form of the turtle shell by fracturing the central area into 3 separate pieces. |

Here we have included a small selection of samples from the portfolio. Maureen has experimented with a wide range of media and techniques to produce many different examples of pattern making.
Collage and printing have been used to try out the possibilities of different design compositions. |

| The general theme of the ocean provided the inspiration for many samples of technique and allowed Maureen to experiment with non conventional quilting materials such as paper. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Above is a sample of free applique using shadow techniques. On the right and below are examples of development work towards the Miniature Quilt assessment. Maureen has fully explored the design potential of grids, sometimes involving sections from the Fibonacci series of numbers. |

| The colour palette for the Miniature Quilt assessment item was inspired by the delicate colours of an oyster shell. The textures and raised curved lines of the shell influenced the design considerably. Maureen chose to interpret the design using bias strip applique in combination with piecing and quilting. Tiny beads provided the final embellishment. The quilt is displayed on a free standing metal frame. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Maureen's 3D container assessment was developed from studies of a dragon fruit. The fabulous colours of the skin , flesh and seeds of the fruit provided a vibrant colour scheme to work with. |

| Maureen's 3D container assessment is a visual delight! It is beautifully constructed and technically faultless. The narrow strips of black and white refer to the flesh and seeds of the fruit inspiration and add a wonderful accent of contrast to the other, more colourful, fabrics. | |||||||||||||||||||||

Every face of Maureen's 3D container assessment item is a joy. On the right you can see the pierced face and the decorative flange inserts at the corners. The picture above shows the tiny triangular inserts that represent the spiky shapes found on a dragon fruit skin. Congratulations from us all at DesignMatters!! |
