At the conclusion of our Online 7802/7822 Patchwork and Quilting Course, students who have satisfied all the syllabus requirements are awarded a certificate by the awarding body, City & Guilds of London. We would like to offer our congratulations too!

Gardi De Villiers

Gardi's final assessment quilt is a sofa throw. Pieced and machine quilted, the complex design appears layered, floating above other shapes beneath.

Above Left: This is the block which when repeated using careful colour placement created the striking design.
Above: Before working with colour, Gardi finalised the tonal arrangement within the design.

Above: Gardi tried out a whole range of colourways for her quilt before deciding on the final scheme.

Right: The accents of bright warm tones throughout the quilt lifts the whole design.

Left: The storyboard that guided Gardi's design decisions.

Right: Gardi's first assessment piece was a wall hanging for a contemporary space in a modern town house. The design is worked with appliqué, using hand dyed fabrics and is machine quilted. Careful consideration to colour placement has created a pleasing and balanced piece.

Below: Details of the wallhanging show the quilting.

Left: The working drawing for the quilt clearly shows Gardi's plans.

Below right: The story board which sets the scene for the quilt.

Above Left: Lord Leighton's Flaming June makes a welcome appearance in this sample of shadow appliqué.
Above right: Gardi's competence with Markal stencilling is demonstrated in this lovely sample which has been hand quilted.

Right: Tropical flora provided the inspiration for a sample of pieced hexagons. Gardi's beautifully presented notebook pages illustrate her plans.

Above left and right: 3D work using paper.

Left: Colour gradations are explored in this reverse appliqué piece.

Above left: Gardi went to town with the stencilling and produced a set of items for an interior.

Above right: Some of Gardi's prints applied on to little bags.

Left: Clever use of stripes in this simple fabric weaving.

Above, above right and right: The block, 'Sisters Choice' is the subject of this exercise to explore ideas with colour and tonal values. Gardi has quickly made repeats using computer software to see how it would work as a quilt.
